Introduction [applicable to Privacy and Grid Vulnerability sections]

When researching privacy and grid vulnerability as it relates to the "smart grid", in order to arrive at an accurate viewpoint, scope of perspective is critical. What we mean by that is to understand that in an environment of controlled media, a more complete picture is often present - a larger game at play - than just the news that we see. We all understand that "the news" is controlled by a handful of entities with their own interests. Keen observers also note that social change is very often directed by governments (or any force representing a corporate interest) through a method of "Problem, Reaction, Solution." In other words, a problem is created or used in such a way as to get a specific reaction from the public, so that a pre-designed solution can be implemented. So, in this case, let us take two seemingly separate news pieces:
  • 1) A growing societal understanding that smart meters / the smart grid is extremely hackable and leaves our power grid totally defenseless to any motivated hacker (this is true); and
  • 2) An observation that western governments seem to be extremely motivated to pass legislation to restrict internet freedom and access to information (this is also true). The latest version of this legislation in the USA is SOPA PIPA CISPA. (PIPA and SOPA were defeated by a large, unified public voice.)
It is crucial to understand the game of chess at work here. Corporately-directed government want the public to be in fear that the smart grid is completely vulnerable [problem]. But they created this problem, directly, by creating the "smart" grid itself - which in the US was largely paid for through taxpayer funding via the 2008 Economic Stimulus Act. Corporate governments want people to acknowledge the seriousness of the problem [reaction] - but not deal with the root - so that this latest rendition of internet censorship (SOPA PIPA CISPA) actually passes this time [solution]. A public understanding of this "chess-game" is only one step away from ending this process permanently through a massive, informed public response of non-confidence in the current control system of corporate government. This, in our opinion, would be dealing with the root of the problem. It would also pave the way for a higher level of energy-sourcing and society in general.
